A Brief Program Overview
The core of my curriculum consists of teaching methods for each test section. For the ACT's English, Reading, and Science sections, I teach a method for how to take the section and how to pace in order to finish in time. For Math, we work out problems from tests that have been given in the past. I also supplement this math work with Khanacademy (a free online platform) assigned as a daily homework assignment. For the SAT, I teach methods tailored to this test's very different notion of reading comprehension.
The sessions involve teaching/reviewing the methods and reviewing the homework. Homework consists of completed practice tests and test sections. I always work with real tests published by the test maker, those in The Official ACT Prep Guide and SAT Study Guide, as well as those that I have on file.
All lessons are one-on-one and my approach is individualized for the particular student and the time available until his or her test date. For that reason, the number of sessions will vary from person to person, though 8 lessons is usually the minimum. Single lessons can be purchased at any time when needed. Payment is by Venmo, bank transfer, or check.
To begin, I ask the students to purchase The Official ACT Prep Guide (any recent edition is fine) and for the SAT The Official SAT Study Guide. Lessons are currently both in person and by Zoom using the whiteboard tool for demonstrating problem solutions and giving notes. All my students are highly motivated and actually enjoy the process of improving not just their scores and test-taking abilities, but also their knowledge in the core areas of grammar, reading comprehension, geometry, and algebra.
I can schedule any day of the week and can usually find a time that will work for both of us. Please let me know if I can answer any further questions!
Sincerely,
Sean Simon, PhD
